The processing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) requires reliable equipment that allows manufacturers to tightly control particle sizes. Hanningfield’s industry leading conical mill is specifically designed with this in mind and is suitable for the stringent hygiene, safety and regulatory requirements of API processing and the pharmaceutical industry.
Improved PSD Control
A conical mill is far superior in achieving smaller particle sizes and tighter particle size distributions (PSD) compared to other mill types, such as hammer or pin mills. We supply a range of conical screen mills (under-driven and over-driven) to suit varying production scales and throughputs.
For API processing, controlling final PSD targets is crucial in maximising the amount of milled material within the required PSD range and to not waste expensive ingredients. The ever-increasing potency of APIs and ingredients enhances the need to consistently achieve the narrowest possible particle size distribution (PSD). This is to ensure that the drug properties of the final product, such as bioavailability, remains unchanged.
Safer Milling
Another consequence of processing highly potent drugs is the stricter handling and safety requirements demanded by regulatory industry bodies, than those covering standard drug product manufacturing. With 30 years experience in providing solutions for API processing, we have the technical expertise and knowledge for producing exceptionally safe equipment for high containment and dust-free milling applications.
As airborne dust particles can be extremely hazardous, containment is vital in API processing. Our conical screen mills can be designed to be a completely closed system, through the incorporation of split butterfly valves, a closed loop vacuum transfer system, or glove box milling. These options limit the explosion potential of APIs and allows operator exposure limits (OELs) to be kept within the constraints of industry regulations. Read more about these processes here.
