Achieve Uniform Particle Sizing with a Cone Mill
Size reduction mills (i.e. a cone mill) are used widely throughout the pharmaceutical industry for the reduction of active ingredients (API’s), bulk pharmaceuticals (BPI’s) and excipients such as lactose, HPMC (hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose) and others. In most applications, including where granulated powders are used, material will need to be milled in order to provide a specific particle size range which will allow for subsequent manufacturing processes (e.g. blending and compression).
Grinding particles to a specified size is often necessary to increase surface area and improve formulation dissolution properties. By maintaining a consistent average particle size distribution (PSD) for the formulation, a better quality mixture is achieved for creating oral solid dosage forms such as tablets and capsules. Cone mills are also ideal for delumping, deagglomeration and mixing materials involved during pharmaceutical powder processing.
The Uni-Mill U-Series (M05-U, M10-U, M20-U, M30-U) has an under-driven cone mill design, featuring an impeller rotating inside a conical screen. The accuracy of the milling allows tighter PSD to be achieved through precisely controlled particle size reductions. Cone mills are typically suitable for size reduction down to approximately 150 microns (80 mesh) with minimal heat, dust and noise generated during the process. The Uni-Mill cone mill design is highly customisable, with many different screen and impeller sizes available to suit your need.
Scale Up from Laboratory to Large Scale Production
Our cone mill machinery allows for repeatable and predictable scalability results and is designed for full scalability from R&D laboratory to full large scale production. The Uni-Mill M05-U and M10-U (ideal for laboratory applications) carries the same process advantages as those comparable to our full-scale equipment (M20-U and M30-U); therefore, the results from small scale sample batches are reproducible in large scale production.
Listed below is our range of under-driven Uni-Mill cone mill machinery and the production applications they are suitable for.
> Uni-Mill M05-U: designed for laboratory and small scale applications. The cone mill features a 83mm diameter screen (3.25″), enabling throughputs up to ~200kgs/hr (425 lbs/hr).
> Uni-Mill M10-U: designed for pilot or low capacity applications. The cone mill features a 127mm diameter screen (5″), enabling throughputs up to ~400kgs/hr (850 lbs/hr).
> Uni-Mill M20-U: designed for a wide scope of production applications. The cone mill features a 203mm diameter screen (8″), enabling throughputs up to ~2000kgs/hr (4250 lbs/hr).
> Uni-Mill M30-U: designed for large scale, high capacity production applications. The cone mill features a 306mm diameter screen (12″), enabling throughputs up to ~4000kgs/hr (8800 lbs/hr).
